Hi there,
I wanted to try and determine to what extent this website and its concept still exists?
Or is it defunct?
Is there any point in my downloading the software?

Hi there. Welcome to RB 
Difficult question. No one has posted here for a good while, and I don't where those who are trying to create new tools for (and indeed a new version of) RB are with there efforts. Contests stopped happening a year plus ago, and various very talented, important members have not posted for a long time (sorcerer, jamie, echoswitch, ichabod, ospector etc)...
So yeah, I think RB is dead, which is sad. Having said that, if you want to learn programming, or if you want to have fun doing what you already know, RB is a very good way to do so, and I think you should download Robot Battle, and have some fun with it. If you have questions, post them here because I do check here, however infrequently. Perhaps, if RB interests you, we might be able to rekindle some interest in it.

Are contests the only way to fight other robots or can you do one off battles against computer robots? |

I still stop by the forum on occasion, though for 5 or 6 years I didn't post anything. I'm now twice as old as when I started playing RB. |

And, yeah, it's true, if you post, people reply every so often, but that doesn't mean Robot Battle is alive, it just means people wish it was. I hope I'm wrong, but Silicon has not updated Vanilla/RB2 for a long time, and even the seemingly active R++ Development had gone quiet. |

That's pretty much how it rolls around here. I would love to get some robots together with R++ and RppEdit, but it seems to have fizzled a bit. I don't think it's burnt out though, Echo is just very busy with school I believe. Once he wraps up the R++ .dll, I will re-release RppEdit in it's full glory; something I would never have done without Echo's awesome work on the .dll btw.
I actually do click on the site almost daily. If I see a gear lit, I check it out. I really dig this game. Always have.

I'm glad to still see interest in my beloved game. Sorry I kinda fell off the face of the planet. I ran into a hurdle with the dll, and put it aside for a while, and just... forgot about it:(
I have a couple big projects on the go, but we'll see what I can do to finish it up. I honestly don't even remember what I had left to do on it.
Mr. Fox, do you have a short list of what you think needs to be done on it still. |

I watch for email notification of new topics/posts and then visit.
I am also awaiting the R++ code. Once it's finished [enough], I believe I'll be able to make robots easier (and thus have more motivation to try).
I don't think anyone answered Brandahl's question, "Are contests the only way to fight other robots or can you do one off battles against computer robots?" Although you probably already figured it out, the idea is that you write the code of the bot and can upload the file for a contest. You can also download other robot files and use them in the selection screen when you open up Robot Battle.
